Support
oTranslate for iPhone and iPad · iOS 18 or later
Most setup problems have a short fix. Start with the section that matches what you see; if the problem remains, the contact details at the end tell you what information helps us reproduce it.
Set oTranslate as the translation app
- Open Settings on the iPhone.
- Choose Apps → Default Apps → Translation.
- Select oTranslate.
- In a compatible app, select some text and choose Translate.
The system translation-provider option is controlled by iOS and is only shown on supported OS versions and devices. If you do not see Translation under Default Apps, install the latest compatible iOS update, open oTranslate once, and check again.
The wrong language pair appears
Open oTranslate and select the source and target languages again. The app saves the pair to the private container shared with its translation extension. If a previous choice still appears, fully close the system Translate sheet and reopen it after changing the languages.
For automatic source detection, choose the intended target language and enter enough source text for reliable detection. Very short or ambiguous words can belong to more than one language; oTranslate now asks the translation framework to detect the source from the actual text rather than assuming the target language.
Translation failed
A generic failure can mean the device language resource is unavailable, the selected pair is unsupported on the current iOS release, or a temporary system service error occurred. Try these steps:
- Confirm the source and target are different.
- If iOS offers a language download, complete it and retry.
- Try a complete word or sentence instead of a single ambiguous character.
- Close and reopen the Translate sheet.
- Restart the device if the same supported pair repeatedly fails.
The device translation path does not spend Stars. Retrying it never triggers an AI request or a charge.
I have no Stars
Running out of Stars should never hide a supported on-device translation. Stars are used by optional AI tools. You can continue reading the device result, copy it and listen to it without buying Stars. To use AI again, add a Star pack, watch an optional rewarded video when available, or receive the finite Star grant included with a new Premium purchase or renewal.
AI answered the selected text instead of my photo
Attach the image first, then type a direct question such as “Which answer is correct?” or “Translate the sign in this image.” When a photo is attached, oTranslate sends the image and your question as the active context and does not add the text that happened to be selected in the host app. Make sure the preview is visible before tapping Send.
If the photo is very small, blurred or cropped, choose a clearer original. Screenshots with tiny text are easier to read when you crop away empty borders before attaching them.
Open an attached photo full-screen
Tap the image preview while composing, or tap the image shown in a previous Ask AI message. It opens against a dark full-screen background so you can inspect the original prepared image. Tap the close button or dismiss the viewer to return to the conversation.
Photo and AI costs
- A standard text AI operation normally costs 1 Star.
- A photo question costs 5 Stars.
- Some translation engines may use a lower server-configured cost, shown in the app.
- Premium does not make Stars unlimited. Every verified weekly transaction grants 100 Stars, monthly grants 500, and yearly grants 6,000.
- Premium Stars are spent at the same rates as purchased or rewarded Stars.
- If a charged request fails before producing an answer, the charge is refunded automatically.
Stars did not appear after purchase
Keep the app open for a moment after Apple confirms payment. If the balance does not update, close and reopen oTranslate and check the Star ledger. Consumable Stars are credited after a verified StoreKit transaction. Do not repeat the purchase until you have checked whether Apple already completed the first one.
For a payment or refund request, use Apple’s purchase support because Apple processes the transaction. If Apple shows a successful purchase but oTranslate did not credit it, email us with the product, date, storefront country and a redacted screenshot of the Apple receipt. Never email a full payment card number.
Restore Premium
Open Settings → Restore purchases. Restore brings back the ad-free entitlement for an active Premium subscription associated with the current Apple Account. Each verified subscription transaction receives its Star grant once; restoring the same transaction does not credit it again. Consumable Stars already spent cannot be restored. Premium renews automatically unless cancelled in Apple Account subscription settings.
Rewarded video or ad privacy
Rewarded video is optional and begins only after you choose to watch it for Stars. Availability depends on consent, region, network and ad inventory. Open Settings → Ad privacy options when that item is available to review or change consent. Denying tracking does not prevent translation or AI use.
History, favorites and local data
Your translation history, favorites, Star balance and language preferences are stored on the device in storage shared by oTranslate and its translation extension. There is no oTranslate account. Deleting the app can remove this local information, so copy anything important first.
