About Typing Speed Testing

Typing speed is measured in words per minute (WPM), where a standard word is defined as 5 characters including spaces and punctuation. The average typing speed for adults is approximately 40 WPM, while professional typists can achieve 65-75 WPM or higher. Fast typists can exceed 100 WPM, and the world record is over 200 WPM.

Typing accurately is just as important as typing fast. Accuracy is calculated as the percentage of correctly typed characters out of all characters typed. High accuracy (above 95%) is essential for productive typing, as correcting errors slows you down significantly. Aim for accuracy first, then build speed gradually.

To improve your typing speed, focus on proper finger placement using the home row (ASDF for left hand, JKL; for right hand). Practice touch typing without looking at the keyboard. Use all ten fingers and maintain a consistent rhythm. Online typing tests like this one are excellent tools for tracking your progress over time. Regular practice for 15-20 minutes daily can significantly improve both your speed and accuracy.
